DINOv2: State-of-the-art computer vision models with self-supervised learning
(10 min read) (Source: Meta AI)
TLDR: Meta AI has open-sourced DINOv2, a computer vision model that uses self-supervised learning to achieve results that match or surpass the standard approach.
Unlike many recent reconstruction-based self-supervised learning methods, DINOv2 requires no fine-tuning and provides high-performance features that can be directly used as inputs for simple linear classifiers.
The model can learn from any collection of images without needing associated metadata, making it flexible and suitable for use as a backbone for many different computer vision tasks.
Additionally, DINOv2's self-supervised learning approach avoids the limitations of image-text pre-training, making it more effective for tasks requiring detailed localized information.
The release of DINOv2 comes at a time when the performance of joint embedding models that train features by matching data augmentations is plateauing.
Adobe is adding video editing tools to the Firefly suite
(4 min read) (Source: Axios)
TLDR: Adobe is planning to introduce new AI features to its video editing software that will enable video editors to change the lighting in a shot or generate background music using simple text.
The tools build on Adobe Firefly, which the company recently introduced for generating still images and text. The system can read a script and generate a storyboard for the finished piece, and generate different background music and scenery for advertising in different countries.
Adobe is promising its customers that the output from its Firefly system will be on safe legal ground for commercial use. The tool will be released later this year.
Elon Musk says he will launch rival to Microsoft-backed ChatGPT
(3 min read) (Source: Reuters)
TLDR: Elon Musk plans to launch an AI platform called "TruthGPT" to rival Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google. Musk criticized OpenAI for training the AI to lie and claimed that the firm has now become a closed-source, for-profit organization closely allied with Microsoft.
He also accused Google co-founder Larry Page of not taking AI safety seriously. Musk believes TruthGPT will be unlikely to annihilate humans and could be the best path to safety.
The move comes after Musk and a group of AI experts called for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI's newly launched GPT-4, citing potential risks to society.
